Equestrian Sumi-e Galleries

Horses have always had an important place in Asian society.  In addition to being a valuable resource for warfare and agriculture, horses were a symbol of wealth and status as well as of religious and spiritual significance.  From the beginning, horses were given a prominent role in Asian art, a legacy which is widely recognized in the enduring beauty of the terra cotta horses of the Tang dynasty and the late-nineteenth/early-twentieth century paintings of Xu Beihong.

The artist's work here is more minimalist in spirit and composition than much of ancient and traditional sumi-e, but like these older works it captures the essence of the horse and the life spirit that flows between horse and rider.

All works are hand-painted on fine watercolor or rice paper.  Each is matted and hand-stamped by the artist.  Because each is an original artwork, no two are exactly alike nor will any be entirely identical to those shown.  However, each piece possesses the spirit of the ancient art of sumi-e and of its subjects.  Matting colors may vary.  Select pieces are also available as note cards (5" x 7", with envelope).
